What a difference a month can make....
According to Doctors in Belarus and the United Kingdom it is stated that A child in the UK for one month can extend his/her life expectancy by up to two years.

The Chernobyl Children Lifeline was formed in 1992 and is now a registered charity consisting of 140 local groups within the U.K. The remit of the charity is simply to help the children of Belarus overcome the problems brought about by the Chernobyl Nuclear accident of 1986. Belarus was the country most affected, recieving 70% of the contamination produced by the disaster. The main work of the charity is providing recuperative holidays in the U.K. for as many children as possible. In order to do this, each local group raises the necessary funds and finds volunteer host families.

The Great Yarmouth & Waveney link of the charity has been operating for about ten years now and has hosted over 200 children in that time. Approximately twenty children are invited over each year to stay for one month. Here they have the chance to eat uncontaminated food, drink clean water and breath fresh air - something they cannot be guaranteed back home. In addition each child is given daily vitamins to supplement their nutritional requirements. A programme of outings is devised to help the children enjoy their stay and to simulate them both mentally and physically.

Host families play a vital part in the running of this charity. Without them these holidays would not be possible. They provide the children with the love and security they need while they are so far away from their own families. The Great Yarmouth & Waveney link usually host children of between 10 and 12 years of age. This is the optimum age for gaining the most benefit from these respite holidays. Usually they are placed in pairs so that they may communicate with each other in their own language and there is always an adult interpreter on hand if the need should arise. The interpreter accompanies the children on all the group outings, which take place every two or three days.
